Borderlands 4 returns to the looter shooter genre its predecessor helped define — a fully seamless open world on the dangerous new planet of Kairos, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, released on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store (Nintendo Switch 2 followed on October 3, 2025).
MapMaster's 28 interactive maps cover every area across all four regions of Kairos, with every collectible, mission, named enemy, chest, and activity tracked for 100% completion.
The fifth mainline entry in the Borderlands series and a direct sequel to Borderlands 3 (2019), Borderlands 4 is set six years after the Moonfall incident, when Elpis appeared in Kairos's orbit due to Lilith's sacrifice, revealing the planet's location to the galaxy.
Players choose from four new Vault Hunters — Rafa the Exo-Soldier, Harlowe the Gravitar, Amon the Forgeknight, and Vex the Siren — each with three Action Skills and three branching skill trees. A fifth Vault Hunter, C4$H the Rogue, arrives with the first Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, in 2026.
The main antagonist is the Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator ruling Kairos through surveillance and oppression from his capital, Dominion City.
Claptrap recruits the Vault Hunters into the Crimson Resistance, which must collect Command Bolts from three lieutenants — Idolator Sol, Vile Lictor, and Callis the Ripper Queen — to breach the Timekeeper's Vault. Returning characters include Zane Flynt, Mad Moxxi, Marcus Kincaid, Lilith, Amara, and Claptrap.
Borderlands 4 introduces a fully seamless open world — for the first time in the series, there are no loading screens between areas as players explore Kairos. New traversal tools include a grappling hook and a Glide Pack. New weapon systems include a Licensed Parts mechanic and a dedicated Ordnance Slot for grenades and heavy weaponry. Up to four players can explore Kairos cooperatively.
Every area of Kairos is covered across MapMaster's 28 interactive maps, divided into four regions and accessible below:
