Days Gone Remastered: NERO Checkpoint Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

NERO Checkpoints in Days Gone Remastered are the 12 abandoned government outposts that become permanent safehouses once restored — each one housing exactly one NERO Injector upgrade (health, stamina, or focus) inside a white cooler.

Activating them requires a four-step process that most players rush and get punished for.

All 12 locations and their full reward details are included on our Days Gone Remastered Oregon interactive map.

The Four-Step Activation Process

Step 1 — Destroy every speaker first.

Follow the wires running from the central generator to locate all speakers across the checkpoint — on rooftops, guardhouses, traffic barriers, floodlights, and occasionally in unusual spots.

Destroy every single one using a silenced weapon or melee before touching the generator. Each un-destroyed speaker becomes an active alarm the moment the generator powers on, attracting nearby Freakers and potentially waking a Horde.

A checkpoint with an active alarm cannot be used as a rest point.

Step 2 — Find the fuel can.

Every checkpoint generator needs petrol. A fuel can is always nearby — behind the building, on a vehicle in the forecourt, or just inside the fence.

Some fenced generators require finding a hole in the perimeter or climbing over.

Step 3 — Insert the FUSE if required.

Several checkpoints have a fuse box that needs a replacement fuse before the generator will power on.

The most notable case: the Santiam Tunnel NERO Checkpoint requires a fuse found inside the Berley Lake Freaker Nest on the right side of the tunnel wall — burning that specific nest reveals the fuse container immediately.

Step 4 — Power on the generator.

Once all speakers are destroyed and fuel (and fuse) are in place, activating the generator opens all building doors.

The NERO Injector is in a white cooler inside the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) building.

What You Get Per Checkpoint

Every activated checkpoint gives:

  • 1 NERO Injector — permanently upgrade Health, Stamina, or Focus (chosen at the moment of use)
  • A safehouse — fast travel point, bunk for resting, gun locker for weapon storage, map console showing nearby collectibles
  • Trust, Credits, and XP for the nearest Encampment (rewards confirmed in the table)

Two Checkpoints Worth Extra Caution

  • Horse Lake NERO Checkpoint (Cascade) — the Death Train Horde sleeps inside the train carriages directly on the bridge over this checkpoint. Clear the Horde first — activating the generator with a full Horde in range will trigger a catastrophic swarm if any speaker is missed.

  • Old Sawmill NERO Checkpoint (Lost Lake) — has a speaker hidden inside a tree that players consistently miss. Follow every wire from the generator before assuming all speakers are gone. The Old Sawmill Horde is 500 Freakers strong — a missed tree speaker triggers a full Horde response.

NERO Intel: The Bonus Collectibles Inside

Each MMU building contains NERO Intel audio recordings and documents — collectibles that are entirely separate from the Injector and count toward "The Broken Roadshow."

Scan every room inside the MMU once the doors are open, including tables, cots, and equipment counters, before leaving the checkpoint.

Welcome to the Party, Pal

"Welcome to the Party, Pal" (Bronze) — clear all Ambush Camps, Infestations, and NERO Checkpoints within a single region.

This trophy unlocks passively during a completionist run — the Belknap region is the most efficient single target given its compact geography and manageable count of all three activity types.
