Days Gone Remastered: NERO Intel Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

NERO Intel in Days Gone Remastered is the 52-piece archive of audio recorders and text documents left behind by the scientists, inspectors, and field researchers who were tracking the Freaker infection before Oregon collapsed — the only collectible type in the game that directly explains what NERO knew, when they knew it, and what they chose to do about it.

Finding the first one earns "The Ends and the Means" (Bronze): "Discover what happened to NERO." All 52 locations can be tracked in real time on our complete Days Gone Remastered map.

Two Document Formats — One Easily Missed

Most NERO Intel appears as a handheld audio recorder — a small device that plays voice audio when picked up and shows an interaction icon when Deacon gets close.

The remaining entries are text documents (Field Notes, Evacuation Notices, Site Orders) — printed papers on crates, trucks, or corpses that display no proximity icon from a distance.

Unlike recorders, text notes don't announce their presence. Every text note in this guide requires getting close enough to manually spot the paper before the interaction prompt appears.

Three Primary Source Locations

  • NERO Checkpoints (12 MMU Recordings) — one audio recorder inside every Mobile Medical Unit building, always near the microscope, counter, or gun locker. These are collected during or after the checkpoint activation process, alongside the NERO Injector in the same room.

  • NERO Research Sites (18+ entries) — Flight Data Recordings at helicopter crash sites, Researcher Field Notes next to Injector crates in caves, and Field Recordings inside Research Site tunnels. Many sit right beside the Injector white crate.

  • Open world/story automatic (22) — eleven are awarded automatically during Missions (Moments of Lucidity, It's on a Mission, On Herod's Birthday, You Twisted My Arm, Making Contact, I Need Your Help, What It Takes to Survive ×3, They're Not Sleeping, and one more) — these cannot be missed.

The remaining 11 open-world pieces sit in mines, caves, construction sites, roadsides, and wilderness locations with no NERO infrastructure nearby.

Five Require Bike Jumps

Five Flight Data Recordings sit at helicopter crash sites on islands or cliff ledges accessible only by launching the bike with Nitro:

  • Flight Data Recording 2044 — on a crate on a hill by a crashed helicopter, Nitro jump required
  • Flight Data Recording 2041 — on black crates by a crashed helicopter, Belknap region, Nitro jump required
  • Flight Data Recording 2097 — southern Cascade Research Site, Nitro over a gap
  • Flight Data Recording 1377 — double island jump from a crossroads near a gas station
  • Flight Data Recording 1787 — island in Crater Lake, cliff ramp required

Three Horde Warnings — Including One Counterintuitive

Most open-world advice defaults to daytime as safer. Two entries follow this — visit Field Recording 1577 (inside a cave, Research Site) and MMU Recording 0805 (disable all speakers first, large Horde present) during daylight or after clearing the area.

The third reverses the logic: Researcher Field Note 0988 (Metolius Lava Cave) — the description explicitly warns "Travel here during the night; otherwise, you'll encounter a Horde."

The Horde roosts inside the cave during the day. Night is the safer visit window for this specific entry — the opposite of standard advice everywhere else in the game.

Trophy Contribution

All 52 NERO Intel count toward "The Broken Roadshow" (Silver, 75% of 240 collectibles) alongside every other collectible category.

The "The Ends and the Means" (Bronze) trophy fires on collecting the very first piece — unmissable since 11 automatic story entries deliver NERO Intel without any exploration required.
