Days Gone Remastered: Horde Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Hordes in Days Gone Remastered are the 40 swarms of hundreds of Freakers that define the game's most spectacular and terrifying encounters — three are mandatory story objectives, the rest are optional hunts spread across all of Oregon's regions.

Every Horde sleeps during the day inside its den (a cave, building, or tunnel) and roams at night, fundamentally changing the risk profile of any engagement. All 40 are included on our Days Gone Oregon game map.

Three Trophies, Three Different Challenges

  • "One Down" (Silver) — defeat any Horde. The easiest entry point is the Death Train Horde near the Horse Lake NERO Checkpoint in Cascade — during daytime, the entire swarm sleeps packed inside the train carriages on the bridge. Proximity bombs at the carriage doors + Molotov cocktails inside + SMG on the stragglers clears it in under two minutes with the right preparation.

  • "Days Gone in 60 Seconds" (Silver) — defeat any Horde in under 60 seconds on Survival Mode. The Death Train again: seal both carriage exits with proximity bombs, throw two Napalm Molotovs inside each end of the central carriage, and detonate both exits simultaneously as they flee. A fully upgraded Deacon with Focus can often finish within the window.

  • "Lend Me Your Ears" (Bronze) — collect 989 Freaker Ears. Every Horde kill drops ears at scale — a full clear of a large Horde can yield 150+ ears in one engagement. Targeting Hordes throughout the campaign rather than grinding individual Freakers is by far the fastest path to 989.

Day vs Night: The Core Tactical Decision

Daytime — the Horde is stationary and concentrated inside their Freaker Nest den. This is the optimal attack window: use the terrain bottleneck of a single entrance, pre-place explosives and traps, ignite the interior with fire, and pick off Freakers as they funnel out into prepared kill zones.

The Napalm, Molotov, and proximity bombs are most effective here.

Nighttime — the Horde is actively roaming in a spread formation, covering a large area and moving unpredictably. Engaging at night forces a mobile, reactive fight with no terrain advantage. Only recommended when the Horde location is known and significant preparation has been done.

Defeating Hordes Unlocks Crafting Recipes

Beyond trophies, Horde defeats are one of four sources of Crafting Recipes — alongside story missions, Ambush Camp bunkers, and Marauder Camp clears.

Several crossbow bolt and melee weapon recipes are tied specifically to Horde defeats, making the optional clears more rewarding than their trophy contribution alone.

The Standard Approach: Funnel and Fire

For most Hordes nesting in caves or buildings, the most reliable method is:

  1. Scout the entrance during daylight with Survival Vision to confirm the Freakers are sleeping
  2. Pre-place proximity bombs and pipe bombs at the entrance funnel
  3. Throw a Napalm Molotov deep inside the den to ignite the cluster
  4. Detonate proximity bombs as they rush the exit
  5. Use the crossbow with Incendiary Bolts on groups of 10+ that breach the perimeter
  6. Retreat to the motorbike if overwhelmed — Hordes rarely pursue more than 150-200 metres from their den

NERO Injectors significantly affect Horde viability — maxing out Health and Stamina before attempting large optional Hordes dramatically reduces the risk of the engagement becoming unrecoverable.
