Recoats are Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's respec currency — Tint items that let you fully reset a character's Attribute Points, Skill Points, or both. They're not cosmetics and not weapon materials — each Recoat consumed at an Expedition Flag wipes the selected point allocation and returns everything for redistribution.
With 23+ confirmed locations before Load more, Recoats are collectable throughout Acts 1 and 2 and farmable in endgame. All positions are tracked on MapMaster's Expedition 33 interactive maps.
A Recoat resets one character's stat allocation — either Attribute Points (Vitality, Might, Agility, Luck, Defense) or Skill Points (the tree of active combat abilities). The reset is total: all currently allocated points return to the pool and can be redistributed freely.
Attributes and Skill Points are treated independently — a single Recoat resets one or the other per use, not both simultaneously.
Respeccing requires no materials other than the Recoat itself. Use it at any Expedition Flag or at camp by selecting the relevant character menu and holding the reset prompt. The process completes instantly.
Attribute resets are the most common use case. Every weapon scales with specific attributes, so switching from one weapon type to another — or refining your build as better gear becomes available — often means redistributing between Might, Agility, Vitality, and Luck.
Attribute points become more precious as the game progresses; a Recoat lets you correct early allocation decisions without replaying content.
Skill Point resets are less urgent. The game provides enough Skill Points through levelling to unlock every ability in a character's tree by the time you reach the level cap — so unless you're genuinely unhappy with your current skill choices mid-game, a Recoat is more efficiently spent on Attribute resets.
Skills can always be filled out over time; Attribute misalignment is the more impactful problem to solve.
Early Recoats — the one from Nicolas in Lumière - Act 1 (complete his 10-consecutive-perfect-dodge challenge against Sophie), the Eveque drop in Spring Meadows, and the floor pickups in Flying Waters — are worth saving rather than spending immediately.
Builds are clarified significantly by the end of Act 1 when weapon preferences are established, and Picto synergies become apparent. Using a Recoat after reaching Gestral Village, when the first round of merchants and weapons are visible, gives you much more information to build around.
Merchants sell Recoats for Chroma, but stock is limited. Endgame players can farm Recoats from enemies in Renoir's Drafts alongside Colour of Lumina and Grandiose Chroma Catalysts — the only location where they drop at a meaningful rate.
