Clair Obscur Expedition 33: NPC Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 populates every area of its world with named characters — citizens of Lumière debating the Expedition's chances, Gestrals with running jokes and lore fragments, Friendly Nevrons with multi-step quests that culminate in some of the game's best rewards.

The NPC guide tracks all of them: every interactable character across every map, their exact position, and every reward, side quest, and story beat they trigger.

All confirmed positions are on MapMaster's Expedition 33 interactive maps, including characters in the 30 hand-drawn exclusive area maps that no other interactive resource covers.

What the NPC Guide Covers in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The guide organises three tiers of characters.

  • World and lore NPCs are the citizens, soldiers, and residents encountered during story sequences — the people of Lumière - Act 1, preparing for the expedition's departure, the Gestrals throughout Gestral Village with their fights, festivals, and philosophical debates. Most offer dialogue only — lore, humour, or world context — but several carry hidden rewards gated behind specific response choices.

  • Side quest NPCs have objectives, rewards, and sometimes first-playthrough warnings.

  • Friendly Nevrons form their own interconnected chain spanning multiple areas with a major collective reward at the end.

World NPCs and Festival Token Priorities in Lumière

The densest concentration of named NPCs is in Lumière - Act 1, and several interactions carry permanent consequences.

Emma (Sophie's sister, who spawns at the camp after speaking to Gustave's Apprentices) triggers a story transition the moment you agree to hear her speech — clear all NPC conversations, purchase the Old Key from Colette, and collect every item in the area before engaging Emma.

Antoine's quiz unlocks a Festival Token needed for the Old Key and other purchases. The correct answers: "67 years ago" (Question 1), "Expedition Zero" (Question 2), and "Abilities you internalise by using Pictos in battle after enough times" (Question 3). These answers can be found by talking to NPCs in the harbour area, but the guide saves you the detour.

The Life Enjoyer, Trash-can Man, and Eloise (combat challenge with Overcharge) all reward Colour of Lumina — each position is pinned in the checklist.

Side Quest NPCs: The Most Rewarding Interactions

Jar in Spring Meadows: Find Resin in the area, bring it to Jar, then shoot the torch with Free Aim. Rewards an auto-collected Journal Entry. Optionally fight Jar after for 3 Colour of Lumina and a Chroma Catalyst.

Demineur in Flying Waters: Find the Intact Mine on a nearby ledge and deliver it. Rewards the Deminerim weapon for Lune. Optional fight after for 3 Colour of Lumina and a Chroma Catalyst.

Gestral Gambler in Gestral Village: Behind a locked hut in the Gestral Casino area. Choose "I like to gamble" then "I don't care about my chances of dealing more damage in the long run" to receive the Roulette Picto — one of the game's highest-variance build-defining passives.

Troubadour in Stone Quarry: A music practice challenge — dodge the red attacks, let the green ones hit. Complete all three waves to earn the Healing Parry Picto and Resplendent Chroma Catalysts. Fight him after for additional rewards.

Berrami in the Gestral Bazaar: Every 10 Journal copies brought to Berrami earns 20 Colour of Lumina. Completing all 49 Journal Entries yields 80 Colour of Lumina from Berrami across four deliveries — one of the largest passive Lumina Point pools available from a single NPC chain.

Grandis at The Carousel: Removing the ice around the carousel (requires the Paint Break ability from 4 Lost Gestrals) earns Maelle's French Bob Haircut. Position is pinned in both the NPC and Haircut guides.

The Friendly Nevron Chain: 100 Colour of Lumina at Stake

Scattered across the world are Friendly Nevrons — white-coloured versions of standard enemies who offer quests rather than combat.

Completing their requests unlocks rewards per NPC, but the chain's payoff is the culminating encounter with Blanche at The Fountain: complete 9 or more Friendly Nevron quests without killing them, and Blanche awards 100x Colour of Lumina — the largest single Colour of Lumina reward in the game and the unlock for the "Aiding the Enemy" achievement.

The full chain covers: Jar (Spring Meadows), Demineur (Flying Waters), Bourgeon (The Small Bourgeon), Hexga (Stone Wave Cliffs), Troubadour (Stone Quarry), Portier (Esoteric Ruins), Benisseur (Red Woods — donate 3,000 then 10,000 then 25,000 then 50,000 Chroma to the fountain, and Recovery Picto), Danseuse Teacher (Frozen Hearts — parry challenge rewards the Danseuse Outfit for Lune), Chalier (Floating Cemetery), and Blanche (The Fountain).

The Karatom quest in Gestral Village and the Grandis quest at The Carousel are also counted toward the total.

First-Playthrough Warnings: Four NPCs to Handle Carefully

  • Emma (Lumière) — agree to her speech only after clearing the prologue area completely.

  • Demineur (Flying Waters) — complete the quest first; optionally fight after. The checklist flags: avoid attacking Demineur during your first playthrough without completing the quest first.

  • Troubadour (Stone Quarry) — complete the music challenge before engaging in combat. Attacking before finishing the challenge skips the reward.

  • Benisseur (Red Woods) — pour Chroma into the fountain to complete the quest before choosing to fight. The Chroma donations unlock the Recovery Picto; skipping them loses it.
