Nioh 3: Boss Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Nioh 3 has over 100 boss encounters spread across six historical settings — Warring States, Heian, Antiquity, Edo, Bakumatsu, and the Final Battle of Edo.

Every boss is pinned on MapMaster's interactive maps with its exact spawn location, triggering mission or myth, mandatory or optional status, and Soul Core drop — the complete reference for 100% completion. You can access every map via our Nioh 3 interactive guide hub.

How Many Bosses Are in Nioh 3?

There are over 100 boss encounters across the game — a mix of mandatory story bosses, optional field bosses requiring specific conditions to trigger, and Crucible bosses found exclusively inside the story dungeons.

Many bosses appear across multiple eras, counted each time separately. The guide below tracks every encounter individually, flagging mandatory and optional status so you know which ones require a side quest or myth to be active before they'll spawn.

Mandatory vs Optional: Why Both Matter

Mandatory bosses gate story progression — you cannot advance without defeating them.

Optional bosses are frequently found behind side missions, myths, or sub-missions that must be started before the encounter activates. Here are a few examples:

  • Magatsu Warrior only spawns after completing Horie's Fleeting Petals Sub Mission
  • Demon of Pride requires unlocking the Kurama Tengu Guardian Spirit first
  • Usui Sadamitsu in Heian only becomes accessible after defeating Takasugi Shinsaku in Bakumatsu

Skipping optional bosses means missing Soul Cores, Yokai Teardrops, and Valuables that make subsequent encounters easier.

The Recurring Boss System: Same Enemies, New Contexts

One of Nioh 3's most distinctive design choices is repeating bosses across different eras with different stakes.

Mezuki appears in Warring States, Bakumatsu, and the Final Battle of Edo — sometimes mandatory, sometimes optional, and once as a simultaneous dual encounter alongside Gozuki.

Kamaitachi appears three times in Warring States alone across different missions. Ryomen Sukuna is fought in both the Warring States and Heian.

Each encounter with a returning boss is tracked separately in the checklist — defeating one instance doesn't mark the others complete. The recurring system also means multiple opportunities to improve specific Soul Cores by defeating the same yokai at a higher level.

Core Combat Tips for Every Boss Encounter

Use Ninja Style to harass bosses with fast hits and Mist dodges to drain their Ki. Once their guard breaks, immediately shift to Samurai Style (R2) to land high-damage Martial Arts while they are staggered.

When a boss is surrounded by a red aura, they are about to unleash a Burst Attack — pressing R2 with precise timing triggers a Burst Break, cancelling their move, dealing massive Ki damage, and lowering a Yokai's maximum Ki.

The Living Artifact (Triangle + Circle) is best saved for Dark Realm phases: it imbues your weapon with elemental power and acts as a safety net against fatal combos during a boss's most lethal sequence.

Bosses do not scale — if you're struggling, increase your level and try again rather than attempting to optimise your way past a significant gear gap.
