Buried Treasure Chests in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced are the 22 dig sites spread across the Caribbean Sea — each unlocked by finding its paired Treasure Map first.
The chest location is never marked on the world map until the corresponding map is in Edward's inventory: no map, no dig prompt. All buried treasure chest locations can be seen and tracked on Map Master's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced free interactive maps.
Every Treasure Map is a physical item — found on a skeleton, looted from a warehouse, or picked up from a camp — that sits in the Secrets category of the map filter.
Once collected, it appears in the Codex under the Treasure Maps tab with two pieces of information: a pair of coordinates and a hand-drawn sketch of a landmark near the dig site (a rock formation, a palm cluster, a waterfall, or a cave entrance).
The chest is almost always on a different island from where the map was found. Sail to the coordinates, cross-reference the sketch with the local terrain, and look for the shovel-dig interaction prompt at ground level.
The prompt only appears with the map already collected — visiting the correct coordinates without the map reveals nothing.
Chests reward a combination of Reales (typically 2,500–3,000 per chest) and one of four additional reward types:
For 100% completion, the chest rewards that matter most are the 6 Ultimate Plans, 3 Art Pieces, and 1 Portrait from specific buried locations.
Most remaining chests give Reales and cosmetics that are useful but not required for any trophy. Tracking which specific chests reward which Ultimate Plans is the most efficient approach for Jackdaw upgrade planning.
Beyond the 22 standard buried chests, the Treasure Dealer shop at Great Inagua unlocks four additional Restored Maps from assembled fragments.
Preserved Map Fragments come from raiding Warehouses in settlements like Havana and Matanzas. Tattered Map Fragments drop from Pirate Hunter frigates when the Wanted Level is high.
Digested Map Fragments come from skinning white Jaguars. Weathered Map Fragments are inside large locked chests in smuggler dens.
Each completed Restored Map leads to one of the game's highest-value buried chests, including the Shade and Shadow Robes and Wooden Eyeball Trinket from Sacrifice Island.
The Cape Bonavista Buried Treasure Chest cannot be dug on the first visit to Cape Bonavista — return after fast travel unlocks and "This Tyro Captain" (Sequence 3) is complete.
The Isla Providencia chest requires reaching a specific point in the main story before the island becomes accessible. Nothing is permanently missable — all chests remain available in free-roam after the story.
