Nioh 3: Spirit Vein Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Stand in front of a Spirit Vein and nothing happens. No prompt. No animation. It just sits there flickering while a ledge you need stays out of reach. In Nioh 3, that feeling is intentional — and it has a specific answer every time.

Over 100 Spirit Vein locations are pinned across all seven maps included in our Nioh 3 guide hub, each one tagged with its exact activation requirement.

Most demand a specific Guardian Spirit. Some need a Lesser Crucible cleared first. Others won't unlock until after a different era's story milestone. The following guide is the fastest way to know which is which.

Four Spirits, Four Keys

Nearly every Spirit Vein in Warring States and the Eternal Rift is gated by one of four Guardian Spirits, each obtained from a specific boss:

  • Enko drops from Jakotsu-baba at the end of the Hamamatsu Crucible during The Hamamatsu Incident. This is the first Spirit you'll use — it activates the majority of early Warring States Spirit Veins in Maisaka, Iinoya, Lake Sanaru, and the Haunting Caves, enabling wall-running traversal across ledges and gaps.

  • Kongojishi drops from Takeda Shingen at the end of the Warring States' main story. It unlocks the remaining Warring States Spirit Veins in Tenryu River, Maisaka, and Lake Hamana — and also opens three Spirit Veins in the Eternal Rift itself, including the basement of the Forge building where the Deflection Expert Secret Skills Text is found.

  • Kurama Tengu drops from Great Tengu in Mount Kurama, Heian. This one reaches back into Warring States — the Tenryu River Spirit Vein in the ravine, both Hamamatsu Spirit Veins on the ledge above the road, and the Iinoya waterfall all require Kurama Tengu. It also unlocks the two Kamo Village upper-mountain Spirit Veins in Heian.

  • Oh drops from Minamoto no Yoritomo at the end of Heian's main story. It unlocks the northern Hachijo Spirit Vein in the icicle ravine — accessible after visiting Antiquity and returning — and the Eternal Rift Spirit Vein behind the shrine building.

The Backtracking System: Heian Veins Locked Until Bakumatsu

Some Heian Spirit Veins have nothing to do with Guardian Spirits. Five Spirit Veins in Rokuhara and Nishiichi, one in Lake Sanaru, and one in the Eternal Rift are simply locked until after you progress to Bakumatsu.

Walk past them in Heian, and you'll find them inactive. One Rokuhara Spirit Vein specifically requires defeating Takasugi Shinsaku in Bakumatsu before it becomes available — not just reaching the era, but completing a story beat within it.

Similarly, several Spirit Veins in Rokuhara and Nijo Castle only activate after clearing a nearby Lesser Crucible. The Death Veil Spirit Veins in the Final Battle of Edo work the same way — they unlock in sequence as you clear each Lesser Crucible in that map.

Two Tactical Uses No One Mentions

Spirit Veins are usually discussed as traversal tools — reach a ledge, cross a gap, get to the Sudama Merchant. Two Mibu Spirit Veins in Bakumatsu work differently.

Both are explicitly flagged as letting you infiltrate the Mibu Enemy Base without being killed by Gatling gun fire. The lower mountain-wall Spirit Vein and the wooden platform Spirit Vein both bypass the gun emplacements that make a standard frontal approach punishing.

The second Vein: after ascending the Rokuhara pagoda Spirit Vein to the top floor, getting back down doesn't require fast-travel. Jump into the tunnel and hold X to float back down using your Guardian Spirit — a mechanic the game doesn't explain.

All Spirit Vein Locations

Hundreds of Spirit Veins spread across every era. The full breakdown by map — each pinned with its Guardian Spirit requirement, Lesser Crucible gate, or story gate:

  • Warring States area map covers the Enko, Kongojishi, and Kurama Tengu-gated network. The Heian interactive map covers the dense Hachijo and Rokuhara networks plus the Bakumatsu-locked veins.
  • Return to Edo and Bakumatsu cover the Sanjo, Shichijo, Mibu, Gion, Kiyomizu, Nijo Castle, Shirakawa, and Kyoto Imperial Palace networks.
  • The Final Battle of Edo carries the highest density of any single map in the game, with Spirit Veins making up the entire vertical structure of Edo Castle's traversal.
  • All the Eternal Rift Spirit Veins and their specific boss prerequisites are on the Eternal Rift interactive map.
  • Antiquity is the only map in Nioh 3 with no Spirit Veins — its vertical structure uses the Spirit Stone Box elevator system instead.
