Mafia: The Old Country: Note Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Notes — also referred to as Journal Notes in the game's menus — are the most abundant collectible in Mafia: The Old Country.

With 88 in total, they are single sheets of paper found pinned to walls, left on desks, tucked into drawers, and scattered across every chapter from the Prologue to Chapter 14's final confrontation.

Every Note is mapped at exact coordinates inside MapMaster's Sicily guide — built directly on the game's own map of the island.

Notes vs The Collector Trophy

Unlike Newspapers, Photographs, Saint's Cards, and Mystery Foxes, Notes are not required for The Collector trophy.

They are tracked in the game's Journal Menu — separate from the Collection Menu that tracks the four trophy-required collectible types.

Collecting all 88 Notes contributes to 100% completion but does not unlock any dedicated trophy. They are worth finding for the lore, the Safe combination codes, and the tactical intelligence they contain — not for achievement hunting.

How to Tell Notes Apart from Newspapers

Both appear as white paper objects in the environment, which causes frequent confusion:

  • Newspapers — thicker stacks of printed paper with illustrated covers. Usually on benches, crates, or stands in open areas. Part of The Collector trophy.
  • Notes — single thin sheets, often handwritten or typed on single pages. Pinned to walls, on desk surfaces, or beside environmental props inside buildings. Part of 100% completion only.

Both types show as white map icons when Enzo walks nearby — the same minimap indicator system used for all collectibles except Mystery Foxes.

Three Categories of Note

Not all 88 Notes are equal in practical value:

Safe Combination Notes — the most immediately useful. Each of the five Safes has a nearby Note containing its combination.

Important: for the Salvatore's Apprentice trophy, crack the Safe before reading the combination Note — not after. The five combination Notes are the Farmer's Romantic Poem (Chapter 3), Impound Yard Incident Reports (Chapter 3), Invoice — T. Wallace & Son (Chapter 6), Marino's Combination Record (Chapter 6), and Monthly Reminders (Chapter 6 — D'Amico's office).

Tactical Intelligence Notes — guard patrol schedules, villa blueprints, and operational orders that enrich situational awareness in stealth sections. Chapter 6's police station and Chapter 7's Marquis bordello are particularly dense with these.

Lore and Character Notes — the majority of the 88 total. Letters, ransom notes, official memos, and personal correspondence that build the Torrisi family's world from the ground up. The Prologue alone contains 9 Notes depicting mine conditions, food rations, and Enzo's early circumstances.

The Richest Chapters for Notes

Chapter 6: La Difesa Siciliana contains 16 Notes — the most of any single chapter — spread across the Market Square, the San Celeste Town Hall printing plates building (10 Notes alone across desks, message boards, and cabinets), and the upper level of D'Amico's office.

The Prologue contains 9 Notes before Enzo has even left the sulfur mine.

Chapter 14: La Merica contains 9 Notes, including six that are only accessible during the Isabella playable section — a unique chapter segment where Enzo's perspective shifts to Isabella searching Villa Torrisi. The Notes in Isabella's room (Photograph of Isabella's Mother, Enzo's Letter, Isabella's Journal) and Don Torrisi's office (Tino's Plan, Letter from Don Torrisi, Torrisi's Expansion) cannot be collected by Enzo.

All 88 Notes Are Chapter-Specific

Unlike Newspapers and Mystery Foxes, no Notes appear in Explore Mode. Every one of the 88 is found only during its specific story chapter.

Missing a Note requires Chapter Replay — collectibles are saved instantly on pickup, so quitting to the menu immediately after collecting mid-replay counts permanently. Check the Journal Menu after completing each chapter to see exactly which Notes were missed before advancing.
