There are 8 Smithies in Crimson Desert — blacksmiths found in every major settlement across Pywel who handle all permanent gear progression. Every confirmed location is pinned on MapMaster's maps accessible on the Crimson Desert guide hub.
Blacksmiths (Smithies) are NPCs where you upgrade the refinement level of your gear and craft weapons whose recipes you learned from crafting books.
They all provide the same core service, so it doesn't matter which Smithy you visit.
The three core services at every Smithy are Refinement (permanent stat upgrades on weapons and armour), Crafting (building items from Crafting Book blueprints), and Repair (restoring durability on damaged items).
Most Smithies also have a public Anvil and Grindstone nearby for temporary pre-fight buffs.
Upgrading your equipment in Crimson Desert is called Refinement — not enhancement, not upgrading.
The system covers weapons, armour pieces, shields, and jewellery, and every item has 10 Refinement levels to work through.
Your base stats are directly tied to the gear you're wearing — if bosses are killing you in two hits, your armour isn't refined enough.
Interact with any Smithy and select Refinement. Pick the item from your equipped gear list — the Smithy shows exactly which materials are required before you confirm.
Refinement does not cost silver at early levels, just the materials listed. Material requirements by gear type: weapons primarily need Iron Ore; wooden shields need Timber; leather armour needs Hides and Bones from hunting.
Both the Pickaxe (for ore) and Logging Axe (for timber) are available at any Provisioner's Shop.
Refining from Level 1 to Level 4 costs only standard materials. The moment you try to push to Level 5, the Smithy stops asking for iron and starts demanding Abyss Artifacts — the same resource used for skill tree upgrades.
The recommended approach is to refine your primary melee weapon and chest armour to Level 4 first, then prioritise spending Abyss Artifacts on skills like Keen Senses before investing them in Refinement past Level 4 on gear you might replace soon.
Crimson Desert allows you to refine a weapon by sacrificing an exact duplicate of that item. If you find two identical low-tier swords from a bandit camp, you can melt one down to pay the Refinement cost instead of gathering materials.
This makes looting enemy camps during the early game far more valuable — keep duplicates rather than selling them immediately.
Hernand has two: Turnali (Hernand Smithy, east of the Tavern — your first and most important blacksmith) and Alec, who unlocks after completing the A Rumor at the Goldleaf Trading Post faction quest.
Pailune has two: Forgehart at the Beighen Smithy on the southern edge of Beighen village, and an unnamed smithy inside Pailune City.
Demeniss has one in the middle of the city. Delesyia has one on the south side of the Castle.
The Crimson Desert region has two: Samir, by the Equipment Shop building, and Tibo, on the north side of Tommaso.
The Greymane Camp eventually gains a Smithy through camp expansion — once fully upgraded, it provides the same Refinement and Crafting services as any city blacksmith, eliminating city return trips for basic upgrades.
All 8 Smithy locations are marked on the Hernand interactive map, Pailune map guide, Demeniss region map, Delesyia interactive map, and Crimson Desert region guide.
