Shields in Code Vein 2 are guard-type Defensive Formae — the blocking counterpart to Bracers (parry) and Dodge Formae (evasion).
Unlike the original Code Vein, where blocking was tied to your weapon and Blood Veil, Shields in the sequel occupy a dedicated Defensive Slot and can be swapped at any Mistle independently of your weapon choice.
All 8 confirmed Shield locations are tracked on MapMaster's Code Vein 2 interactive maps.
Press L1/LB to raise your Shield and enter a blocking stance. While blocking, incoming physical damage is either reduced or fully negated — depending on the specific Shield — at the cost of Stamina.
Unlike Bracers, which consume Ichor per parry, Shields draw on your Stamina bar during sustained blocking. Holding the block stance continuously drains stamina regeneration, so timing blocks to the moment of impact rather than holding permanently is the most efficient approach.
Every Shield also passively increases your base defense rating while equipped, regardless of whether you're actively blocking.
The three Shield families in the checklist behave differently:
Every Shield has a Perfect Guard mechanic. Time the block precisely to the moment of an incoming attack, and the result differs from a standard block: the stamina cost is negated entirely, and the enemy takes damage from the deflection.
A Perfect Guard isn't just a defensive success — it's an offensive opportunity built into every Shield in the game. Against aggressive enemies and Bosses, landing consistent Perfect Guards shifts the fight's momentum significantly.
All three Shield families have Light and Heavy variants. Light Shields carry lower Burden requirements and provide less passive defense. Heavy Shields provide higher passive defense and stronger block performance at the cost of increased Burden.
Before equipping any Shield, check its Burden value against your active Blood Code's available stats — exceeding the Burden threshold triggers Overburden, affecting your overall combat performance alongside the Defensive Slot.
Shields can also be transformed at Jadwiga's workshop using Runeleafs to alter their elemental resistance profile — useful for targeting specific boss weaknesses.
