Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Codex Entry Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Codex Entries in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced are the historical and lore database entries that build Edward Kenway's understanding of the Golden Age of Piracy — unlocked by reaching new locations, progressing through story quests, approaching specific NPC groups, and interacting with glowing orbs hovering near the Caribbean's most significant landmarks.

All Codex Entry locations are visible on our Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced maps.

The World of Piracy: One Set, Four Subsets

Every Codex Entry belongs to the "World of Piracy" Set, divided into four Subsets that reflect the type of knowledge being recorded:

  • Lore — historical context entries covering the era's defining concepts: the Golden Age of Piracy, the War of the Spanish Succession, Pirate Articles (the code of conduct governing pirate crews), the Pirate Round (the trade route pirates exploited), the Jolly Roger, Rum, and Sea Shanties. All seven Lore entries unlock automatically at the very start of the game before Edward's feet touch Caribbean soil.

  • Locations — entries covering specific places: Jungles, Pirate Camps, the Florida coastline, Coconut Beach, Nassau, and the cities themselves. Most Location entries unlock automatically on first arrival at a new area or when a specific quest triggers.

  • Groups — entries covering the factions and social groups of the Caribbean: the Spanish Empire, the British Empire, Dancers, Drunkards, and Swashbucklers. Group entries for Dancers and Drunkards unlock by walking close to those specific NPC crowds in Havana — they're not quest-triggered, just proximity-based.

  • Landmarks — entries tied to historically significant buildings and structures, each marked by a glowing orb that floats near the landmark itself. The orb must be approached and observed — it does not unlock automatically.

Havana's Landmark entries include: Castillo San Salvador de la Punta (orb above the entrance), Cathedral of Havana (orb on the roof), Governor's Prisons (orb at the iron gate), Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis (orb at the church's large door), Castillo de la Real Fuerza (orb above the bridge), and the Governor's Mansion (orb above the locked gate — most easily collected during the "Mister Walpole, I Presume?" quest when the area is naturally visited).

Two Unlock Methods

Automatic unlocks — triggered by story progress, entering a new region for the first time, or completing a specific quest.

The eight Cape Bonavista Lore entries all unlock before any gameplay begins. The Havana City, Spanish Empire, and Groups entries unlock automatically on arrival during "Lively Havana."

The two Abaco Island entries (Florida and Coconut Beach) unlock automatically on arrival and departure during "This Tyro Captain." The Nassau City, British Empire, and Swashbucklers entries all unlock automatically on first arrival during "Now Hiring."

Glowing orb collection — Landmark Subset entries require physically locating the orb near each historical building and approaching it. The orb glows clearly and is visible without Eagle Vision, floating just outside or above the structure it represents.

Unlike the automatic entries, which require no active effort, Landmark entries are the only Codex type that can be missed during a visit to a city if the building is not approached closely enough.

Codex Entries vs Vault Data Files

Both Codex Entries and Vault Data Files populate the in-game Animus database. Codex Entries focus on historical lore — the people, places, and practices of 1715–1722 Caribbean life.

Vault Data Files are the modern-day equivalent — encrypted logs and Animus-related records connected to the 2095 storyline and the game's Rift system.
